Fundamentalism & Terrorism: Understanding the Twisted Links
Zealots who carry out acts of terror "in the name of" their religious beliefs do not reflect the beliefs of the vast majority of those who share the basic faith they claim. The religions of Islam and Christianity are not fundamentally violent, but can be used by extremists to justify violent acts.
Join workshop leader Dr. Cynthia "Cindy" Combs as she shares her in-depth understanding of these religions and those who misuse them to commit violent acts. Dr. Combs is a professor of political science at UNC Charlotte. She regularly confers with government and the military regarding issues of terrorism.
The workshop will meet at Hickory Metro Higher Ed Center on three consecutive Mondays, February 16, 23, and March 2, 2009. Hours each day are 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. HMHEC is located on the east campus of Catawba Valley Community College, 2760 US Highway 70 SE, in Hickory.
This workshop was presented through Prime Life Ed-Ventures in 2008 - and is back by popular demand! Here's what some of the participants had to say about it:
"A must-attend event of relevant international issue."
"Dr. Cynthia Combs did an outstanding overview of the terrorist potential within the Christian and Muslim communities. Her understanding of the history and culture of the countries made the classes come alive."
"A very informative event and excellent speaker."
"The facilitator was so knowledgeable. Every question that was asked was easily answered, clearly and concisely."
