Meditative Practices: Labyrinth and Yoga
This outdoor workshop experience will explore two popular meditative practices: the labyrinth and yoga. Here's what you'll enjoy:
Labyrinth
We'll explore the various uses of the labyrinth. Unlike mazes, which have many paths and deadends, labyrinths are built unicursally, or on a single path to the center. They are one of the simplest forms of focused meditation and are often hailed as offering long-term health benefits as they elicit a "relaxation response" and other positive effects.
As early as 2000 B.C., labyrinths have been used in a variety of ways, both secular and religious, and they are experiencing a modern revival. In fact, many are available within the western North Carolina region. From cathedrals to public parks, hospitals and universities, labyrinths have been used for:
- Meditation/instrospection
- Inner healing
- Team building
- Dancing
- Problem solving
- Prayer
- Relaxation
- Creativity
- Inspiration
- Ceremonies/rituals
- Stress relief
- Therapy
- Teaching and learning
- Staff and student development
- Economic/community development
- Pastoral care ministries
- Hospitality
Participants will experience the labyrinth firsthand in an idyllic outdoor setting in Granite Falls. Leader Wyn Flo, an artist, will host the event at her home. Wyn walks the labyrinth every morning to start her day.
Yoga
During the afternoon, you'll also be able to experience some easy yoga postures, breathing techniques, and meditation practices with yoga. Yoga can help you:
- Reduce stress
- Increase stamina
- Strengthen your body
- Become more flexible
- Gain a sense of balance
- Make the mind, body, spirit connection
This introduction to yoga is safe, gentle and adaptable to all ages and body types. No yoga experience is necessary.
Yoga leader Susan Stevens has been practicing and studying yoga for more than 20 years. She currently teaches yoga at Heart Center Yoga Studio in Hickory. Her areas of expertise include gentle yoga, restorative yoga, and prenatal/postpartum yoga. She uses modifications to make the practice accessible to everyone.
Preparation for the Course
We encourage everyone to wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes that can be removed easily. The labyrinth floor is sand, and the experience is best when walked barefoot. We also ask that you bring a towel to dry your feet, and a (smooth river) rock that can be written on at the workshop and then left on the course. This is reminiscent of "laying down your burdens."
If you regularly practice yoga, you may want to bring a yoga mat. If not, you may wish to bring a blanket that can cushion the ground for you. Sunglasses may also be in order for a sunny, spring day!
